The Gap a suburb of Brisbane located approximately 9 kilometres from the CBD. It is generally considered a quiet neighbourhood with 52% of households being couples with children.
In the 2006 Census, the median age was 38. So it is plain to see that the Gap is a family centred suburb with a shopping centre, childcare facilities, schools, a high school and many churches. There is also an extensive parkland area.
It’s name, the Gap, refers to its situation as a valley between Mt Coot-tha and Enoggera Hill as well as Mt Nebo.
The Gap was originally settled as farm and particularly dairy land in around 1859. The first primary school was opened in 1912 and since then the population has increased steadily to 16,000 in 2006. In 1917 with the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act, there was a rapid increase in population, which also brought about poultry farming in the area.
A feature of The Gap is Slab Hut Farm which is a Heritage listed farm house built in the 1890’s. It was originally a dairy farm and can be located at 847 Mt Nebo Road.
The Gap is part of and next door to a large section of State Forest called Brisbane Forest Park. The park was originally run by the Forestry Industry but is currently managed by the Wildlife Park and Office Rangers.
The main information centre is located at the Gap, on Waterworks Road. The information centre has a restaurant and a small animal enclosure where animals that are native to the Brisbane Forest Park can be viewed. If you are lucky enough, you may catch a glimpse of the platypus that they have on display there, or walk through the bird aviary. It is a rare chance to see some animals that are difficult to find in their natural environment.
The Gap Village Shopping Centre is the heart of the Gap, where residents do all their local shopping. It has everything a small community needs, with a supermarket, bookshop, jeweler, bakery, newsagent, tool shop etc.
The Gap is home to four primary schools, The Gap State School, Hilder Road State School, Payne Road State School and St Peter Chanel Primary School. The Gap also caters for High School Students with a State High School. It was established in 1959 and has about 900 students. It is a school which is known for its outdoor, leadership and personal development program which is unique to the school. It also has very good sporting facilities including an indoor rock climbing gym.
The Gap is a family oriented suburb with everything a community needs to be educated, healthy and happy.
